1. Mobile Broadband / CDU 550 General Questions.
1.1.1
What is Mobile Broadband 1x EV-DO?
Wireless Mobile Broadband is a Sprint supplied packet data service operating in areas of its CDMA network (for coverage maps see http://www.sprint.com/). Mobile Broadband has its own internet domain meaning the user will not need to subscribe to a separate internet service provider (ISP) to gain access to the internet via the CDU550 USB modem.
The CDU550 will eliminate the need of a wire line (PSTN) computer modem which, typically, offers data speeds of up to 56kbps. The Mobile Broadband modem will offer data speeds averaging 300-600kbps wirelessly "over the air "within coverage areas. Should the user wish to solely use the CDU550 USB modem for both mobile (on the road) and fixed (home) use, there is no need to continue with existing ISP monthly charges except in circumstances where the user wishes to retain their dedicated email address. In this instance a minimum monthly charge is required to be paid to the ISP to maintain the email address.
1.1.2
What is the difference in speed in a Mobile Broadband 1x EV-DO coverage area to that of 1x High Speed Internet?
Speed differences between the two concern downloading data. Mobile Broadband 1x EV-DO provides average speeds of 300-600kbps and 1x High Speed Internet provides average speeds of 60-100kbps. Uploads speeds for the two are the same, running at speeds of 60-100kbps.
1.1.3
What areas have Mobile Broadband 1x EV-DO coverage?
For up to date maps of Mobile Broadband coverage visit Sprint's CDMA website: http://www.sprint.com/.
1.1.4
What happens when my data session goes from EV-DO to 1x?
If you leave an area with Mobile Broadband 1x EV-DO coverage, and enter an area with 1xRTT coverage, the handover is seamless. You will notice the coverage icon will change from DO to 1X, and the speed will drop from Mobile Broadband speeds, to 1xRTT speeds.
1.1.5
What happens if I go from 1x to EV-DO?
If you are in a 1x mode, and traveling into an area where there is Mobile Broadband available, the CDU550 WILL ONLY automatically change to DO mode if your CDU550 is in dormant state (no activity has been registered for 20 seconds). Otherwise, you must manually reconnect the CDU550. For more information on the dormant state, please refer to the user manual.
1.1.6
Can I get a Sprint email account?
If you are changing to Mobile Broadband from your existing ISP, and need a new email service, Sprint.com provides a free web based email service that you can use. For more details please see http://www.sprint.com/.

If the response is "Host unreachable". Disconnect the CDU550 and try reconnecting.

I just activated my CDU550. But I can not connect to Internet.
First, make sure that Franklin Connection Manager shows "Mobile Broadband:Disconnected". If it is connected you can disconnect it by pressing "Stop" button. Then click on "Menu" on the top left of Franklin Connection Manager. Select "Device Info & Diagnostics". And press "Update User Profile" button on the left bottom, and your will see "Mobile Broadband:Updating User Profile...". Please be patient until you see "Mobile Broadband:Disconnected". Now you are ready to enjoy your Internet connection by pressing on "GO" button.
Most of the time this problem occurs when a user closes the Franklin USB Connection Manager before it completes activation process. It is not enough to press "Finish" button at the last activation Wizard dialogue box with "Success" message. You have to wait while the system updating user profile; you can see "Mobile Broadband:Updating User Profile..." on LCD display panel. You must wait until you notice "Mobile Broadband:Disconnected" message.
